HealthSouth New England nurse manager honored with top companywide award

WOBURN, Mass., May 4, 2018 – Karen Delosa, nurse manager and Certified Rehabilitation Registered Nurse at HealthSouth New England Rehabilitation Hospital in Woburn, has been honored as one of only six finalists out of more than 29,000 inpatient rehabilitation employees in the Encompass Health, formerly HealthSouth, network to receive the 2017 Outstanding Employee Achievement Award. Karen was honored yesterday at an awards banquet in Birmingham, Alabama.
Award finalists were selected based on their performance in four areas: contributions to extraordinary patient experience, team spirit and cooperation, commitment to continuous quality improvement and going above and beyond the call of duty. The process began with each of Encompass Health’s 127 inpatient rehabilitation hospitals honoring an employee of the year. Then, six winners were named at the regional level; and then Karen was named as the overall recipient for the Company.
“Karen is absolutely dedicated to her patients and staff,” said David Coggins, CEO of HealthSouth New England. “She embodies all the qualities you seek in a rehabilitation nurse.”
Having worked as a nurse for more than 30 years, Karen took on the role at just 10 years old taking care of her siblings. Originally a pulmonary nurse, she found her calling in the rehabilitation field after her brother broke his neck in a skiing accident in 1991. Because of that experience, she discovered a passion for helping others who have experienced life-altering illnesses and injuries.
“I’ve been that family,” said Karen. “You get up in the morning and everything is OK. Then, at the end of the day, it’ll never be the same. I want to help them get through that.”
